Procurement & Specifications

• Do: Verify that the flag strictly maintains a rectangular shape with a 3:2 length-to-height ratio.
• Do: Procure flags made of woven or machine-made cotton, polyester, wool, silk, or khadi bunting.
• Don't: Purchase or distribute plastic flags to residents or children.
• Don't: Purchase or display any flag that is torn, frayed, soiled, damaged, or disheveled.

Setup, Position & Orientation

• Do: Position the flag in a place of supreme honor where it is distinctly visible.
• Do: Ensure the Saffron band is strictly at the top when displayed horizontally.
• Do: Ensure the Saffron band is on the Flag’s own right (viewer’s left) when hung vertically.
• Don't: Display the flag inverted with the Saffron band facing downward.

• Don't: Use the flag as a drapery to cover the speaker’s desk, podium, or stage backdrop.
• Don't: Place shawls, garlands, or decorative objects on or above the flag mast.

National Anthem & Ceremonial Respect

• Do: Instruct all present to stand at attention facing the flag during the hoisting ceremony and National Anthem.
• Do: Play or sing the complete National Anthem (Jana Gana Mana) immediately after unfurling.

• Do: Immediately dry a wet flag flat indoors after lowering before folding and storing it.
• Don't: Leave the flag hoisted during severe storms or turbulent winds that could tear the fabric.
• Don't: Store wet or damp flags in closed bags, causing mold, staining, or rot.

Children, Paper Flags & Cultural Events

• Do: Encourage children to wave paper or cloth flags with respect during cultural functions.
• Do: Set up designated collection boxes near the venue for children to deposit paper flags after events.
• Don't: Allow children to paint, write, or draw on actual flags during drawing competitions.
• Don't: Allow paper flags to be dropped, scattered, or trampled on lawns and play areas.

Security, Staff Training & Storage

• Do: Train estate and security staff on the official folding method tucking Saffron and Green bands under the White band so the Ashoka Chakra remains clearly visible on top.
• Do: Provide clean white gloves to security personnel handling the main flag during lowering.
• Don't: Allow security gateposts or entry points to display misaligned, dirty, or drooping flags.

• Do: Store soiled, faded, or damaged flags to destroy them as a whole in private, preferably by burning in a clean flame or burying in a wooden box with full dignity.
• Don't: Discard or throw flags into dustbins, street drains, or trash compactors.
