Overview of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Election

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) was founded On April 16, 2007, by merging 12 municipalities and 8 gram-panchayats with the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad (MCH).Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medchal-Malkajgiri, and Sangareddy are now part of the GHMC. These four districts have six zones, 30 circles, and 150 municipal wards.

From a competitor’s standpoint, they must be aware of the ward’s territorial extent and prestige: whether it is a General (or) Reserved Ward (reserved for ST, SC, BC and Women). Furthermore, every contender must be an elector.

A corporator in greater Hyderabad municipal corporation election is elected by popular vote to lead each municipal ward. The term of office of ward elected members at a regular election must be Five years from the date set by the State Election Commissioner for the first session of the GHMC, according to Section 6(1) of the GHMC Act, 1955.

The corporators then elect the City Mayor, who serves as the titular leader of the GHMC for a five-year term. As a result, the Mayor of Hyderabad is chosen by the people. Finally, the Municipal Commissioner, an IAS official, is appointed by the Telangana government and has executive powers.

Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Result

Total number of wards in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation or GHMC total seats GHMC election was 150. GHMC winners list is as follows:

  1. TRS: 55
  2. BJP: 48
  3. AIMIM: 44
  4. Congress: 2

According to political observers, the decline of the Congress & TDP, anti-incumbency towards the TRS government, and the aggressive posture of BJP leaders against alleged TRS appeasement tactics are some of the causes that helped the BJP achieve significant gains in the Hyderabad municipal elections.

Following its strong showing in the recently concluded Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, the BJP emerged as the main challenger to the ruling TRS in Telangana.

The saffron party won 48 of the 149 wards in the votes (one ward was not declared owing to a legal issue), a significant increase from the four it won in 2016.

The TRS won 55 wards, a significant decrease from its 2016 total of 99, although it still emerged as the single largest party.

The Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM received 44 votes, keeping its hold on Hyderabad’s old city, while the Congress received only two votes.

The TDP, once a formidable force, came up empty.

Counting was halted in the Neredmet ward because symbols other than the normal Swastik symbol (crossed arrow mark) predominated.

The Telangana High Court stopped on Friday a circular issued by the State Election Commission (SEC) allowing the counting of ballots with “distinguish marks” other than the conventional Swastik sign (crossing arrow mark) for the GHMC elections on December 1.

While hearing a House Motion, Justice Abhishek Reddy suspended the SEC’s circular. He stated that ballots with “distinct marks” should be stored separately and that if they damage the poll results, the result should not be revealed.

Even though the ruling TRS emerged as the single largest party, the mayoral election is decided by votes cast by co-option members like MLAs, MLCs, and MPs from the GHMC voting area, as well as 150 elected members.

The 2020 Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation election was held on December 1, 2020, to elect members to the municipal corporation’s 150 wards. The BJP made major advances inside the GHMC, largely to the detriment of the TRS. Following the announcement of the results, the TRS formed the government with the help of AIMIM.
